Overview
- With 6 percent of world output, the United States is the sixth-leading producer of dry edible beans, behind Brazil, India, China, Burma (Myanmar), and Mexico.
- During 2005-07, dry bean farm cash receipts averaged $528 million, ninth among U.S. vegetables.
- Together, North Dakota and Michigan account for half of U.S. production.
- About 20 percent of U.S. dry bean supplies are destined for the export market, while imports make up about 14 percent of domestic dry bean consumption.
- Averaging 6.5 pounds per person during 2006-08, annual per capita use of dry beans was 12 percent lower than 1996-98 but the same as 1986-88.
