Briefly
Dr. John R. Kort is the Associate Administrator of ERS. In this position, he shares with the Administrator responsibility for formulating policies and directing the administration of programs relating to economic and social science research and analysis and other ERS activities. As a researcher and research manager, John's principal areas of expertise have been regional econometric and input-output modeling, regional economic accounts, regional and industrial classification, and regional business cycles. His work is published in several books and a range of scholarly journals and numerous popular outlets.
Background
John has 34 years of experience as a regional economist. John came to ERS from the Department of Commerce where he was Chief of the Regional Economic Analysis Division in the Bureau of Economic Analysis for over 18 years. John has published extensively in professional economic journals, has written and contributed to a number of books on regional econometric and input-output modeling, and has a long list of articles in periodicals on various regional economic analysis topics. He has twice been the recipient of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bronze Medal Award for outstanding professional employees and also received Indiana University of Pennsylvania's outstanding alumni award. John is co-Trustee of the Garvin-Kort Endowed Fund for Excellence in Faculty Research, Department of Economics, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Education
John received his Bachelor's degree in Economics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1974, a Master's degree in Statistics from the University of Tennessee in 1977, and a Ph.D. in Regional Economics, also from the University of Tennessee, in 1979. Professional Affiliations
John is an active member of the Southern Regional Science Association (SRSA), the Regional Science Association International, the American Economic Association, the Association of Public Data Users (APDU), the National Association for Business Economics, and the Council for Community and Economic Research. He currently serves on the Executive Boards of SRSA and APDU, and was previously chair of the North American Regional Science Council. He also serves on the Editorial Boards of several regional economic journals and referees for a number of other professional journals. John was awarded the David E. Boyce Award for Exceptional Service to Regional Science by the North American Regional Science Council. He is past president of the SRSA, and recently was named a Fellow of SRSA—only the third non-academic to receive that high honor in the 47-year history of the association.
