Briefly
Betsey Kuhn is the Director of ERS’s Food Economics Division. The Division covers a broad array of research areas including food consumption, diet and health, food safety, food manufacturing, wholesale and retail food sectors, food price behavior, and food assistance. A consistent theme across these diverse topics is the well-being of consumers. Background
Betsey joined ERS in 1990 after directing the research program of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. She directed several major projects at CFTC, including a study of whether circuit breakers moderate stock index futures price volatility. Her 13 years experience at ERS began as the Deputy Director of the Resources and Technology Division. She helped to create two new ERS divisions, the Food and Consumer Economics Division and the Food and Rural Economics Division and ERS’s first major extramural research program, the Food Assistance and Nutrition Research Program. In 2002, she was named a Meritorious Executive in the Senior Executive Service. Education
Betsey received a Ph.D. and an M.A. from Stanford University, and a B.A. degree from Goucher College. Professional Affiliations
Betsey is a member of the American Economics Association and the American Agricultural Economics Association. She has chaired the AAEA Quality of Communications Award Committee and has been a member of the Advisory Board of Choices.
