Briefly

Mark is the Deputy Director for Data and Web Communication for ERS’s Food Economics Division. The Division’s research program focuses on economics of consumer food choices, food policy, and food market and price dynamics. The program covers a wide array of topical issues on the welfare of American consumers, particularly the low-income households. Mark is currently working on projects related to improving the data infrastructure for food and nutrition policy research, and on projects enhancing users experience and satisfaction with accessing the Division’s research findings on ERS’s website.

Background

Prior to becoming the Deputy Director for Data in 2006, Mark led ERS’s research program on food market structure and prices. Before that, Mark led ERS’s research program on macroeconomics of food and agricultural economy for three years. From 1992 to 1993, Mark was in charge of ERS’ research program on land values for two years (1992-93).

Education

Mark received his Ph.D. from Iowa State’s economics department, and completed his M.S. in economics at Southern Illinois University.

Mark is a member of the American Agricultural Economics Association and the American Economics Association.

Mark is focusing on the characteristics and use of micro-level, scanner data to examine issues related to consumers and food retailing. He co-directed a series of studies that unearth the economic forces underlying the dynamics of produce markets and emerging trade practices. Mark has researched a variety of topics published in such journals as the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, the Journal of Comparative Economics, the Journal of Agricultural Economics Research, the North Central Journal of Agricultural Economics, and the Journal of Decision Sciences.
